Churches and Monasteries
Church of St.Gerasimos
Deemed as the religious center of Kefalonia, the monastery is located 15km from Argostoli. In 1560, Ag.Gerasimos rebuilt the country chapel with many members of the convent naming it “New Jerusalem”. Dressed with the burial robes of the Saint, the Sacred Relic of Ag. Gerasimos is kept in a silber larnax for blessing the faithful. The patron is celebrated on the 16th of August during which we also recommend you to take part in the traditional panigiri.
During your trip to the Paliki Peninsula starting from Lixouri, we recommend you to stop by the Kipouria Monastery. Built in the 18th century, it overhangs a cliff viewing to the West, offering the guests a view of one of the most spectacular sunsets of this island. You may find in the Church holy relics such as a piece of the Holy Cross, rare post-Renaissance, post-Byzantine and Italian-Cretan icons.
Church of Virgin Mary Lagouvarda in Markopoulo
One of the most famous temples of Kefalonia, Virgin in Markopoulo accepts thousands of pilgrims and other “curious” guests. On the 15th of August, day on which Greece celebrates the Dormition of the Virgin, small harmless snakes with patterns of a cross on their heads, appear in this church.
